Ons verhaal begon met de vraag of Kristens opa als Amerikaans gevechtspiloot betrokken was bij het Vergissingsbombardement van 31 maart 1943, waardoor Lisa’s oma alles kwijtraakte.
Intussen lazen wij de briefwisseling tussen opa Bob en zijn moeder, boeken over de geallieerde luchtmacht en interviewden wij overlevenden van vergissingsbombardementen, militair en traumadeskundigen.
Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat wij een breder verhaal te vertellen hebben en dat wij dit samen goed kunnen doen, als podcastmaker en historicus, en kleindochters van Bob en Beb. Daarom maken wij een tweetalige, documentaire podcast.

Naast alle tijd die wij zelf in dit project steken, huren wij zowel in Amerika als in Nederland een professioneel productieteam in. Mensen die ons kunnen helpen met de verhaalopbouw, het controleren van de feiten, geluidsontwerp en audio-nabewerking. Daarbij willen wij onze podcast juist nu goed onder de aandacht van luisteraars in Nederland én de Verenigde Staten brengen. Om samen met hen op zoek te gaan naar wat ons verbindt.
Dit ‘re-humaniseren’ van (oorlogs)geschiedenis en wat dat kan betekenen voor onze relatie met het verleden en elkaar, wordt treffend verwoord door de Amerikaanse pedagoog en historicus Lonnie G. Bunch III:
“The work of rehumanizing history is helping us understand our connections to the past, but also to each other, […].These connections are the ones that we have to forge, because this is the way we build community– internationally, nationally, and locally. Good history is about good storytelling. Because it reduces to human scale. It gives people an interaction with the past. It gives life.”
Beb & Bob | Collateral Damage is an audio story documenting and intertwining the lives of Beb, a Dutch civilian during WWII, and Bob, a first Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. We, Lisa Koolhoven and Kristen Hayford, are the granddaughters of Beb van der Schalk – van de Belt and Robert (Bob) E. Burton.
At this time, we have collected research including first hand-accounts of pilots in the 359th Air Force Group, interviews with survivors of the Forgotten Bombing of March 31, 1943 as well as interviews with war historians, and original letters from Bob written to his mother while overseas.
We will be distilling our work into a 35-40 minute episode – one in Dutch and one in English – for listeners in the Netherlands and the United States.

With the funds we raised, we will hire first class audio producers and sound engineers from both the United States and the Netherlands to support us in creating a story that both Dutch and American listeners will learn from and enjoy.
It is very important to both of us that we create something that truly resonates with audiences, helping them to discover or rediscover their own ancestral roots, just like we were able to do in the process of making this audio series. Using our family histories to understand global history, we will deepen our understanding and connection to the past and to each other.
